Hi all, this is my first post here. I don't know much about sleds, and couldn't find this answer anywhere, so I'm hoping someone here can help me: My neighbor's sled won't start, he gave it to me to fix (I'm a motorcycle mechanic). It has really low compression, especially on cylinder 3, so I take off the cylinder head, it's a seizure issue.

So I'm going to be rebuilding the top end. Here's my question. I know it's Polaris Indy XLT, but that's all I know. Definitely form the 90's. My neighbor says he doesn't know what year it is. I've looked all over for a familiar 17 digit VIN, but nothing. I want to be sure, before I go ordering pistons and rings, because I'm not even positive on the displacement.

I *think* it's a 580cc. On the right side, above the footboard there is a sticker with some info, a 7 digit serial number, and a place where it says manufacture date, but I can't read it. It says 00519_3. Not sure if that means may of '93 or what as I can't make it all out. Ty in advance for any help guys. The 7 digit number is actually your model number.

Should start with a 09. Check out babbittsonline.com you can click on snowmobile then parts, then you can put in your information and pull of the deal parts breakdown on the sled. Ahh thank you for the info, and good call on the carb boot, I'll check there for sure. I went back out and looked at the sled, the model number is completely rubbed off save for the last 2 digits, I didn't even see it before.

That said, any other ideas then? There are a few ways to identify the sled. Pictures would help. As a mechanic, do you have a micrometer? Carbs are either 34mm or 38mm bore stock. That can limit the years.

Also, check the engine over for an id tag, should help as well. Does it have a purple water cover for the heads that says xlt? Thermostat housing on the top? Any id on the sled at all like xtra-10; xtra-12 on the suspension? That will also limit years. Okay, so yeah, purple water cover, all it says on it is XLT Xtra Lite Triple.

Yes, thermostat on top. Only other markings I saw on sled was 'IFS' on the skis, and 'SKS' on the back of sled, shown in pictures here: photobucket.com/whatisthissled sorry camera is crappy and so is photographer:P. Hope this helps. Thanks again. Well the thing with the model number being rubbed off is, it's just printed on a sticker, and that part of the sticker (the first 5 digits of the model number) is just completely rubbed through. So, no way to find out what it said, I can read the serial number. I figured with the sticker being right above the foot board, it just got rubbed by someone's boot while riding.

But I guess I don't need to see the model number now, as you guys were so helpful in identifying the sled for me. As I said, I've never touched a sled before really, I'm hoping you guys could answer a couple other questions for me. I'll make a different thread though for that.
