Hey, I have looked around for ages on this, basically Im looking to use my mics in Skype by going through pro tools. I have seen various products like source connect and that but I only want to use my mics to talk not to record. I'm using a ProFire 610, 2 Akg C 451B's And they are hooked up to Pro Tools 9. I went into Skype's preferences and they do have the Pro Fire 610 as an option but the Idea was to add effects and what not then be able to hear through skype. I dont even know if this is possible but any help would be greatly appreciate! I just did this last week! Microsoft Nt4 Usb Drivers Download. I've been working on a record down in California for the last 8 weeks, and after all the beds were done, the band and I headed back up to our hometown Vancouver.
Got a call from the exec producer of the project, who wanted us to redo some guitars. So I pulled out the little labs, got the guitarist down to my studio, got the producer on Skype and started working away. After the first day, the producer complained about the quality of the built in mic, he was having difficulty hearing the parts the guitarist was playing though it.
So here's what I did. I mirrored the outputs of all my tracks in pro tools.
Everything was going out 1-2 to my speakers, and outputs 3-4. I got a dual 1/4' to stereo mini Y cable and plugged outputs 3-4 into the line in jack on my macbook pro. I switch the input source in the Skype preferences from 'internal mic' to 'line in'. Now when i hit play in pro tools, it's went to my speakers in Vancouver, and directly, line in quality into my laptop, through skype and out the producers speakers in California. All we needed now was a talkback mic. I plugged a mic to a free input in protools, and routed it to an aux track.
I solo safed the aux track so the mic was alway live. Make sure to only send this track to outs 3-4 (skype line in) and not your outputs (1-2). Feedback's a bitch. I inserted Masseys free 'talkback' plugin onto the aux track. This plugin cuts any output while the transport is playing, so the mic is live when playback is stopped, the guitarist and I can speak freely to the producer until we hit play, then the output of the mic is cut and the producer will only hear the direct output of protools. If you are a crazy person and don't use massey plugs, you can get the same end result with a key gate.
This system worked out really well. We were talking with the producer through a 414, he could hear us perfectly, he could hear parts the guitarist was playing direct through protools. He was so ecstatic about it he is still trying to convince me to patent it somehow This turned into a much longer post then I intended and I realize it might be way more info then you needed. If you just want a better quality mic to use with skype, you don't need protools at all. Plug you 451 into a pre with phantom power, plug the output of the pre into the line in on your computer, and switch the input source in the Skype preferences from 'internal mic' to 'line in'. Or easier still use a dynamic mic and a XLR to 1/8' cable Happy skyping!
